As a civil war shakes Quebec, Valerie (Labrèche-Dor) is the sole survivor of a mass execution where her boyfriend is killed. Years later, she's in a close relationship with her new partner, Gabriel (Landry). At the long-term care centre where she works as an orderly, she befriends Jeanne (Lanctôt), an erudite and funny woman, dealing with an important physical handicap. Mixing realism and worrying strangeness, Le rire presents a humane exploration of the survivor's syndrome, the grieving process, the distance of time, the power of love, and the joy of being alive. Il y a huit ans, une guerre sanglante a secoué le Québec. C’est là que Valérie a vu mourir son amoureux. Même si elle semble maintenant heureuse et qu’elle est en couple avec un nouvel homme, Gabriel, son passé revient périodiquement la hanter, prenant la forme de cauchemars et d’hallucinations. Elle travaille comme préposée aux bénéficiaires dans un centre de soins de longue durée, où elle s’est liée d’amitié avec une aînée aux opinions bien tranchées. Survivant par le rire, Valérie sera appelée à replonger dans ses souvenirs et à confronter ses traumatismes. Le rire, une comédie dramatique post-apocalyptique sur le syndrome du survivant, le deuil et le pouvoir de l’amour, est le cinquième long métrage réalisé par Martin Laroche.
