At a remote lake house in the Adirondack Mountains, a couple entertains an out-of-town guest looking for inspiration in her filmmaking. The group quickly falls into a calculated game of desire, manipulation, and jealousy, unaware of how dangerously convoluted their lives will soon become in the filmmaker’s pursuit of a work of art, which blurs the boundaries between autobiography and invention. The lives and sentiments of three artists interlock and are pushed to provocative limits in this enthralling drama that rejoices in subverting expectations and exploring the layers of a fragmented world.

Au bord d’un lac dans les monts Adirondack, Gabe et Blair, deux artistes ayant plus ou moins réussi à Brooklyn, accueillent Allison, une cinéaste à court d’inspiration pour son prochain scénario, à l’auberge dont ils ont hérité. Les trois ne tardent pas à créer un lien et à s’adonner à divers jeux où se mélangent désir, défi, séduction, manipulation et jalousie, cela sans trop se douter à quel point le tout risque de devenir complexe et malsain. La frontière entre la réalité et la fiction devient de plus en plus floue, les sentiments et les vies des trois artistes s’entremêlent et s’entrechoquent. Tantôt amusant et tordu, tantôt intensément dramatique, Black Bear jette un regard quelque peu ironique sur le processus de création artistique, l’épanouissement et la désillusion.
