An orchestra and its famous maestro Kent Nagano tour the great northern tundra of Quebec to visit six different Cree, Innu and Inuit communities and share with them an Aboriginal chamber opera presented in the languages spoken in each area. In each community, local artists join in with the symphony, bringing their own personal histories and insights to create a truly collaborative performance. These performers reflect on reconciliation and how music can be the ultimate tool to bridge and bring together different cultures. Chaakapesh, The Tricker’s Quest – written by Tomson Highway, composed by Matthew Ricketts, and performed by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra–is the fruit of cooperation across five linguistic groups including Cree, Innu, Inuktitut, French and English, involving artists from multiple cultures that call this land home.

À l’automne 2018, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal créait l’opéra de chambre Chaakapesh, le récit plein d’humour d’un héros fondateur du peuple innu chanté en trois langues (innu, cri et inuktitut) par Florent Vollant, Ernest Webb et Akinisie Sivuarapik. Le conte Chaakapesh, le périple du fripon, merveilleusement imaginé et écrit par le grand dramaturge autochtone Tomson Highway, a trouvé toute son expression musicale dans sa collaboration avec le compositeur de musique contemporaine Matthew Ricketts. L’orchestre a ensuite présenté cette œuvre unique dans six communautés du Grand Nord québécois: Kuujjuaq, Salluit, Kuujjuarapik, Oujé-Bougoumou, Mashteuiatsh et Maliotenam. Bien plus qu’une simple tournée, Chaakapesh, le film, nous place aux premières loges d’un espace de rencontre absolument exceptionnel, autant pour les artistes que pour les collectivités visitées. Des témoignages poignants, des discours essentiels et le maestro Kent Nagano comme on ne l’a jamais vu.
