Give as a gift
A bittersweet comedy about two middle-aged, estranged besties who find themselves back in their hometown, struggling with aging parents, paths not taken and each other as they give up the traditional idea of "happily ever after" to embrace their own.
Director Biography - Rahel Grunder
Anthropologist-turned-filmmaker Rahel fuses her love for kickass women, complex relationships, and quirky families in features, TV, and docs. Her works include the docudrama EMILIE KEMPIN-SPYRI, the comedy DADDYHUNT, and the web series I WANNA BE SINGLE WITH YOU. Splitting her time between L.A. and Zurich, she juggles scripted and real-life challenges, and has been staffed on TV series including WILD WEST CHRONICLES, NEW HEIGHTS, and BESCHATTER.
Director Statement
As someone who moved from Europe to the U.S., leaving behind friends and family to pursue filmmaking, the story of Spinsters resonates deeply with me. Now in middle age, I grapple with many of the same questions as our characters: unfulfilled dreams, careers that take unexpected turns, and the growing awareness that my parents are aging and need care.
This film reflects a reality many of us face: that life isn’t only about chasing big dreams, but also about cherishing small, meaningful moments and the people who share them with us. Spinsters is a celebration of friendship and of the quiet joy found in simply living. As we grow older, life becomes a series of reassessments, and it’s in these shifts that we can discover strength, humor, and fulfillment. I believe this story speaks to a universal truth — that when we let go of “supposed to” and embrace “why not,” we open ourselves to a deeper kind of contentment.
Filming Spinsters has been one of the best experiences of my life. We worked with a mostly female, middle-aged team on location in Frederick, where the community welcomed us with open arms. Bringing Sasha Carrera’s heartfelt story to life in this setting was a profound reminder of why I became a filmmaker: to inspire, to let audiences escape into another world for two hours, to remind them they are not alone, and to share laughter at the absurdity of life — even in its darkest moments.
