Marty Becker is an overweight medical student from Louisville, KY who travels to San Francisco to research hospitals to intern after medical school. While there, he meets another medical student from Louisville, Emily, in a twist of fate. Thinking the confrontation was "meant to be", Marty is heartbroken because of, he thinks, his appearance. Three years later and morphed into a different person, Marty runs into Emily again. This time she doesn't recognize him at all. Using this to his advantage and not revealing who he is, Marty embarks on a journey of revenge to win back his confidence, only to find he's on a journey to self discovery

Director Biography - Paul Andrew Perez

Paul Perez is a Steadicam, Ronin operator and editor in Louisville, KY. Growing up in an all medical field family, Paul struck interest in Steadicam as a kid after watching a 1983 PBS special on the inventor of the Steadicam, Garrett Brown and the making of THE SHINING and Garrett shooting footage of Redwood Forest for THE RETURN OF THE JEDI high speeder scooter chase scene. After pursuing filmmaking at Trinity High School, WKU and Full Sail University, where he wrote ON BORROWED TIME as a short film and was encouraged by his screenwriting professor to make it into a feature and gain and lose the weight himself. After graduation, Paul gained and lost 80 pounds for the movie while traveling the US as a PA for CBS’ STAR SEARCH with Arsenio Hall and later joining America’s Next Top Model for 10 years. After gaining 80 pounds in 5 months and shooting the "fat" scenes in 3 days, production then stopped for 6 months for Paul to lose 85 pounds, for then production continued for 2 weeks ending in September 2005. Production started up again in September 2024.

For the past 14 years, Paul has been a Ronin operator and editor for UPHA saddlebred horses shows throughout the US.

Director Statement

My name is Paul Perez and I'm from Louisville, KY and this is my romantic dramedy centered around a love letter to Louisville, “On Borrowed Time”, that UNINTENTIONALLY took over 20 years to make!! It was mainly shot in Louisville, KY and at Makers Mark Distillery with several scenes shot in Jeffersonville, IN, Santa Monica, San Francisco and Sausalito, CA from January 2003-August 2005 and then 19 years later from September 2024-June 2025. Also, for the overweight medical student role, I gained and lost 80 lbs for it. I gained the weight first in 5 months, shot the "fat scenes" in 3 days, stopped production for 6 months to lose the weight and then shot the "thinner scenes" in 2 weeks. The "20 YEARS LATER" scenes were shot from September 2024-May 2025. The 20 year gap was unintentional due to family issues and alcoholism. But I finally finished this film that’s based on a true story that happened to me in college. It was shot on a $10,000 budget on a minidv camcorder (Panasonic DVX100) with no crew and I have all the rights to the music. It was co-produced and co stars my brother John Marc Perez, who I promised I’d finish the movie to before he passed of a brain tumor in 2022. And so, after shooting a new “20 YEAR LATER” ending, I have finished it!!!!. If it takes 23 months or 23 years, don’t ever give up on your dream. Go to the finish line! I hope you enjoy my little movie and give it a chance. YOU WONT REGRET IT, especially the cool opener!!
