Director Statement

The original drafts of this piece were written in 2019. Then world events found their way into the film. The increasing enormity of world events became impossible to ignore. The sense of fear and anxiety we were all experiencing was a fitting backdrop to the struggles faced by this character.

This was the first Ohio University School of Film production after March 2020. Meticulous planning went into the pre-production. We lost days due to contact tracing. We wrote around a lot of hurdles that the pandemic threw up. In the end, we were all very proud that we wrapped without anyone getting sick.

Andrea Arnolds 'Wasp' and the brothers Dradennes were huge influences on the film. The writing process was long and arduous. Trying to unlock how, particularly the Bros Dardenne, explore how seemingly objectionable people have aspects of their character which we can empathize with.

Hopefully, for me, we all can relate to Maggie and her trying to steam through her problems.
