When Liberty Burns examines the life and the death of Arthur Lee McDuffie, a black insurance executive who died at the hands of Miami’s law enforcement officers. The facts behind the and the family man is poignantly reflected upon by McDuffie’s childhood friends and family members. The film also highlights the first-person accounts of those who were directly involved in the discovery of the criminal behavior and in the prosecution of the law enforcement officers who were subsequently acquitted sparking a city wide rebellion within the city’s black community. Interestingly, we hear from a white supervisor and a black Internal Affairs Investigator those who reveal their personal insights and experiences and emotions as sworn professionals. Two black women, both closely associated with the offending police force will, for the first time since the incident, recant their experiences from what is now a 40 year perspective.
