Biographies of Panelists:
Dr. Stephen Anderson has been the psychiatrist for the BC Professional Firefighters' Provincial Burn Unit at Vancouver General Hospital for over 20 years. He is also a Clinical Professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine Department of Psychiatry. In addition to treating patients and meeting with their families, Dr. Anderson also teaches surgery, neurology and psychiatry residents how to assess and treat patients on the burn unit and on other medical/surgical units.
Dr. Anthony Papp is a Royal College board certified plastic surgeon and the Medical Director for the BC Professional Firefighters' Burn Unit at VGH. He leads the Provincial Burn Program with responsibilities in teaching and research in addition to his clinical patient care. Dr. Papp received his medical training in Finland, including specializations in general and plastic surgery, before moving to Canada in 2007.
Alim Somji is based in Edmonton where he is the Executive Vice President of the Jaffer Group. Since graduating from the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, he has led strategic development and investment growth throughout Jaffer’s many business units. Alim was born with a lymphangioma on his right cheek and suffered facial paralysis from a failed surgery at 9 months old.
Anita Zvonar is an internationally published photographer based in Toronto who has been working professionally for the past two decades. She is a graduate of Ryerson University’s prestigious Image Arts Program. At the age of 18, Anita suffered a severe car accident, which resulted in many years of reconstructive plastic surgery. That experience led her to AboutFace, where she has volunteered for the past 22 years.
Dr. Nicolas Bergeron is a psychiatrist at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal and an Assistant Professor at the University of Montreal since 2002. He specializes in psychiatric care of the medically ill with a particular expertise in trauma stemming from his
liaison role at the Montreal Burn Centre and his humanitarian work.
Moderated by Dr Harry Karlinsky, Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia.
