Synopsis:

THE RABBI GOES WEST focuses on one Chabad rabbi, 34-year-old Chaim Bruk, who moved from Brooklyn to unlikely Bozeman, Montana, to bring his brand of Judaism to the American West.

DJFF Film Reviews:

“This seems to me a very objective and honest portrayal of Chabad for its strong points and perceived faults. I enjoyed the film…the “inside baseball” issue is that reform and conservative rabbis and congregations feel threatened with the potential loss of members and financial support when Chabad succeeds in a community. This is a Jewish parochial issue that the film does a good job of exposing.”

~ Mark Boscoe: Chair, DJFF Film Selection Committee

“A very well done and technically excellent documentary with what I considered to be a balanced presentation of the Chabad view vis a vis the other rabbis in the community. Some of my personal bias and views came out but overall I was impressed with both the energy, dedication and commitment of this young rabbi although I am not in favor of all he does. This film brings a timely and needed dialogue to the Jewish community.”

~ Gary Blum: Member, DJFF Film Selection Committee

“I love the lush establishing shots that reinforce the pristine natural beauty of Montana. Altogether, this presents a complicated view of Jewry in these (read: our) parts -- adventurous, outdoorsy, but also, maybe, judgmental and perhaps jealous? Makes the viewer wonder, is there not enough space in Montana for a variety of denominations of Judaism?”

~ Amy Weiner Weiss: Member, DJFF Film Selection Committee & Director of Festivals, JCC Mizel Arts and Culture Center
