Yksi Donald Trumpin presidenttikauden mieleenpainuvimmista hahmoista oli poliittinen neuvonantaja ja peluri Roger Stone. Elokuvan A Storm Foretold alussa tanskalainen ohjaaja Christoffer Guldbrandsen kertoo valinneensa Stonen portikseen yhdysvaltalaisen oikeistopolitiikan maailmaan.

Stone on värikäs hahmo, karismaattinen omalla moraalista vapaalla tavallaan. Hän päästää kameran yllättävänkin lähelle. Usein vaikuttaa siltä, että hänestä on hauskaa, että Guldbrandsen on paikalla todistamassa hänen peliliikkeitään. Eräässä kohtauksessa hän esittelee ohjaajan tutulleen ”tanskalaisena kommunistina”.

Tarina alkaa Stonen henkilökuvana keskellä hulluimpia Trump-vuosia. Hän joutuu oikeuteen, tulee tuomituksi ja yrittää saada Trumpilta armahdusta. Stone on erikoinen näky kampanjoidessaan erilaisissa konservatiivitilaisuuksissa oman vapautensa puolesta. A Storm Foretold on elokuva poliittisesta lähihistoriasta. Vaikka elokuva on tanskalainen, näkökulma on vankasti Yhdysvalloissa. Se päästää katsojan kulisseihin seuraamaan, mitä kaikkien tuntemien tapahtumien taustalla oli meneillään.

One of the most memorable characters of Donald Trump’s time in office was political aide and key player Roger Stone. In the beginning of A Storm Foretold, Danish director Christoffer Guldbrandsen lets us know that he selected Stone as his gateway into the world of American right-wing politics.

Stone is a colourful character, charismatic in his own immoral way. He lets the camera surprisingly close. Often, he seems to find it fun to have Guldbrandsen there to witness his moves. In a scene, he introduces the director to his friend as a ‘Danish communist’.

The story begins as a portrait of Stone amid the craziest Trump years. He goes on trial, is convicted, and attempts to get a pardon from Trump. Stone is a sight to see as he campaigns in different conservative events for his own freedom. Naturally, overturning Stone’s conviction is essential for the golden future of the United States.

However, this is just the beginning. The film gets a new boost as Stone participates in the planning of the infamous January 6 insurrection. Stone does not want Trump and his followers to accept defeat in the election, and protesting takes them to Washington.

A Storm Foretold is a film about recent political history. Although the film is Danish, the point of view is firmly in the United States. It lets the audience watch from the sidelines what was happening behind the scenes of the events familiar to the whole world.
