Pohjois-Vietnamin sumuisessa vuoristossa uudenvuodenjuhlan viettoon valmistautuvat tytöt kiusoittelevat toisiaan morsiamenryöstöllä. Kyseessä ei kuitenkaan ole pelkkä mielikuvitusleikki, sillä hmong-kansan keskuudessa mennään hyvin nuorena naimisiin ja morsiamen ryöstäminen sekä myötäjäiset ovat elävää kansanperinnettä. Mutta miten tällainen pariutumismalli sopii nykypäivänä yhteen valtiollisten lakien, koulussa ja netissä opittujen arvojen tai tyttöjen oman tahdon kanssa?

Palkittu esikoisohjaaja Hà Lệ Diễm seuraa elokuvassaan eläväistä ja voimakastahtoista Di-tyttöä kolmen vuoden ajan. Di käy koulua, vaikka hänen apuaan tarvitaan jatkuvasti maatalous- ja muissa kotitöissä. Flirttailu somessa, viestittely ja oman viehätysvoiman testaaminen kuuluvat elämään siinä missä kenellä tahansa ikätoverilla. Vanhempien avioelämä näyttäytyy työn, ryyppäämisen ja riitelyn kyllästämänä. Sisar puolestaan on päätynyt naimisiin morsiamenryöstön myötä ja odottaa 17-vuotiaana jo toista lastaan. ”Minä en tule olemaan yhtä naiivi”, julistaa Di luottoystäväkseen muodostuneelle ohjaajalle.

Kun väistämätön kuitenkin tapahtuu, käsittelee Children of the Mist vaikeaa tilannetta kiihkottomasti, kaikkien osapuolten näkökulman ja yksilöt ylittävät rakenteet huomioiden. Elokuva on puhutteleva, intiimi sukellus yhteisöön, jossa perinteet jyräävät vapaan tahdon olosuhteiden pakosta – ja samalla mukaansatempaava muotokuva nuoresta naisesta, joka haluaa tehdä omaa elämäänsä koskevat päätökset itse.

High in the mountains of North Vietnam, the Hmong community is isolated from the rest of the world as much by their ancient traditions as by the dense rolling mists. For her debut feature, Vietnamese filmmaker Hà Lệ Diễm spent three years in the community, documenting teenager Di as she finds herself torn between her desire for education and a life outside the village, and the pressures of cultural values that view young women as commodities to be sold for high dowries. Diem’s intimate access and sensitive approach, together with editor Swann Dubus’ keen eye for texture and detail, make for a compelling and eye-opening drama.
