At the height of Afghanistan’s Taliban occupation, in a frenzy of cultural erasure, one Taliban official concerned with the rapid disappearance of his country's history secretly warns the employees of Afghan Films to hide their archives. Ariel Nasr’s The Forbidden Reel is the unearthing of these archives. Both a celebration of Afghani film, and of film itself, Nasr pairs the recovered archival footage and interviews with the films’ directors to create a richly textured collage of Afghan cinema and of modern Afghanistan. This is a film about the importance of artistic preservation and cinema’s capacity to house a country’s collective memory. -NN
Winner, Audience Award at Hot Docs 2020
