Birth Wars chronicles the power struggle between doctors and midwives in the states of Chiapas and Guerrero in Mexico, where maternal deaths are still too common. At the center of this dispute is a question; whose vision of childbirth should prevail? That of the government medical system, or the traditional birthing methods practiced by Indigenous midwives for generations? Through deeply personal stories from the trenches of the healthcare sector, filmmaker and journalist Janet Jarman tells of how midwives are not only demanding recognition for their life-saving work, but also fighting to transform the system into one that prioritizes women's health, needs and choices. -MF
