Director Cecilia Aldarondo offers a visually striking, kaleidoscopic portrait of Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. The film weaves together stories of community-based relief efforts, young activists protesting the government’s deadly austerity measures, and farming communities struggling to survive. These voices are set in contrast to Silicon Valley block-chain evangelists, who descend on the nation alongside opportunistic real estate agents looking to profit from the ruins. A compassionate and subtle cinematic essay, Landfall underscores the resilience of Puerto Ricans in the face of not only a natural disaster, but the disaster of American colonialism and its economic legacies. -SW
