Brazilian artist Alê Abreu’s Academy Award-nominated masterpiece Boy & The World is a breathtakingly original and vibrant explosion of music and colour.

Young boy Cuca’s cosy rural life is shattered when his father leaves for the city, prompting him to embark on a quest to reunite his family. Depicting the wonders and struggles of the modern world, Cuca’s journey unfolds like a tapestry, the animation garnering greater complexity as his small world expands. The story illustrates the clash between village and city, hand crafted and mechanised, rich and poor, as Cuca unearths truths about the nature of the world, and his place within it.

Soulful, intelligent and a joy to observe, Boy & The World is a beautiful animation for all the family.

Why EFFA loves this...

"This is a uniquely beautiful animation. Following a pint-sized child as he journeys through an imposing and ever expanding city to locate his father who has left to find work, O Menino e o Mundo (Boy & The World) deals in simple ideas, but expresses them in such an adventurous fashion with such indelible sites and sounds, that it takes on a life distinctly its own.

A whirling fantasia of striking colours and music, the film foregoes the spoken word and communicates in a universal language that will reach children and adults alike. Both a powerful assessment of the impacts of rampant industrialism and commercialism on our way of life, and a heartfelt reflection on family, this is a meaningful and charming work in equal measure." | Luke - Programming Coordinator
