BEST OF THE FEST - PROGRAMMER’S PICK

”The haunting presence of violence marks the vast plains of the Chilean Tierra del Fuego frontier in Théo Court’s brilliant and provocative narrative, BLANCO EN BLANCO. Rewriting the western genre, the film insists that colonialism entwines with capitalism, genocide of indigenous people, brutal sexism toward all women, pedophilia, and photography.

The sparse palette of whites, grays, and browns combines with the stillness of the cinematography to evoke the slow violence of genocide. It subtly links shooting guns to shooting photographs—indeed, the word blanco translates as both white and target.”

—Patricia Zimmermann, Director, Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival

At the dawn of the twentieth century, Pedro arrives in Tierra del Fuego, a violent and hostile territory, to immortalize the marriage of a powerful landowner. Fascinated with the bride-to-be’s beauty, he betrays the rules and is left to face a land crawling with violence and marked by the genocide of its indigenous inhabitants.
