Four Israeli teenagers undergo the process of life-and-identity-saving gender transformation in a country where military service is mandatory and Orthodox Jewish religion is the law. This emotionally gripping and captivating documentary is directed by George Foster Peabody award-winning and Emmy-nominated director and producer Hilla Medalia, and sheds light on Israel’s repressive cultural, religious, and governmental customs the subjects have to endure just in order to attempt to be themselves. Hilla’s prior works focus on geopolitical subjects ranging from the Palestinian/Israeli conflict to Hurricane Katrina, and “Transkids” is another must-see work of art from one of the emerging voices in documentary filmmaking.
