What do we want from a great FFF film? Plot twists, suspense, and to be made a little uncomfortable. Our Own, directed by Jeanne Leblanc and winner of Best Narrative Feature at the Santa Fe Independent and Brooklyn Film Festivals, gives you every bit of each in a familiar story but with its own twist. Magalie (Emilie Bierre) is a 13-year-old lightning rod in this tale of small village relationship dynamics set in French-speaking Canada. All is normal until Magalie receives some unexpected news during a routine doctor’s visit, which makes her the epicenter of the village swirl as everyone reacts to her news through their own self-interested lenses. Leblanc keeps you on the edge of your seat as Magalie fights her town’s recriminations, while constantly looking for a helping hand, a lending ear, or simply an exit to the maze. No plot spoilers here; just sit back and enjoy the twists and the modest uncomfortableness of this gem.
