In the early 1990s, a group of underprivileged young people from mainland China chose to stowaway across the ocean and sneak into the US, in hopes of finding gold in America. More than two decades later, have they achieved their dreams in America? How are they getting along? This film describes the hard choices and real suffering of underclass people after immigration to the United States. It explores the generation gap and values between old and new immigrants.

In the film, a pregnant Dongmei suffers the loss of her husband and daughter along the perilous journey. Fellow stowaway, Lincoln, helps Dongmei make it safely to New York. Facing poverty, Dongmei resolutely gives up her infant daughter to a white family who can ensure the child a better future.

Twenty years later, Lincoln, obtains his American nationality. He meets and falls in love with new immigrant, Xiaoxue. Xiaoxue has lost her student visa and been abandoned by her domestic boyfriend. Desperate for a green card, she agrees to a fake marriage with Lincoln.
