At 67, after reaching the pinnacle of Israel’s illustration world, Michel Kichka stepped aside at the Bezalel Academy to make way for the younger generation. As a cartoonist, he chronicled the rise and upheaval of the Zionist dream—from a young Belgian volunteer in the Yom Kippur War to a prophet of doom—capturing the shifting values of Israeli society, politics, and Holocaust memory. Known as a “rough Jerusalemite” with a Belgian accent, Kichka fearlessly confronts uncomfortable truths. To reconcile the burden of the second generation, he created a graphic novel exposing his family’s secrets and his father’s silence, which culminated in a family tragedy. This work has been adapted into an animated French feature, a powerful reminder to younger generations of the Holocaust. Contains Holocaust material.
