In 1970s and 1980s Britain, racial tension and police harassment were widespread—particularly targeting Black British youth. Out of this climate of resistance and self-discovery emerged a new sound: Lovers Rock, a soulful subgenre of reggae that became a defining voice of a generation.
Through artists like UB40 and Maxi Priest, Lovers Rock evolved into a global brand. It offered young people a rare sense of intimacy, joy, and connection, and became a form of “girl power” music that empowered a generation of young Black women.
Blending comedy, live performance, dance, interviews, and archival footage, this film revisits an untold era of British cultural, musical, and political history—where rhythm, rebellion, and romance intertwined to create something timeless.
