Based on old legends, this film depicts an isolated agricultural community in Curaçao at the turn of the century. The story focuses on the struggle between creative and destructive forces.

In the village of Desolato, the priestess Solem protects her people from Alma Sola, the symbol of evil and the patriarch of the white landowners ("shons"). Alma Sola, who can transform into any form, strikes when the community's vigilance weakens.

Having sacrificed her fertility for the community's welfare, Solem's strict vow of celibacy is challenged by her longing for love, giving Alma Sola the chance to lead her astray.
