The 2018 Mother Tongue Film Festival featured the first open call for films, receiving ninety-five submissions. The final selection of films featured twenty-nine languages from fourteen regions, with nearly every film shown showcasing a different mother tongue. Here are two films that spoke to us in 2018: Aviliaq: Entwined and Out of State.

Shipped thousands of miles away from the tropical islands of Hawai‘i to a private prison in the Arizona desert, two Native Hawaiians, David and Hale, discover their traditions from a fellow inmate serving a life sentence. It is from this unlikely setting that the two men finish their terms and return to Hawaiʻi, hoping for a fresh start. Eager to prove to themselves and to their families that this experience has changed them forever, David and Hale struggle with the hurdles of life as formerly incarcerated men, asking the question: can you really go home again?
