Bolu, a new mother, struggles with her mental health after the birth of her second child. She is plagued by vivid visions and hallucinations that threaten to destroy her grip on reality. Her husband, desperate to help her, takes her to see doctors who dismiss her symptoms as a natural part of motherhood, leaving Bolu feeling alone and helpless. As she spirals into darkness, Bolu considers taking her own life to escape the unbearable pain. As Bolu's mental health deteriorates, her husband and Mother become increasingly concerned for her well-being. They struggle to get her the help she needs, but their efforts are complicated by the stigma surrounding mental illness and the lack of resources available for new mothers. Meanwhile, Bolu's visions become more intense and terrifying, leading her to withdraw from her loved ones and put herself and her baby in danger. Out in the Darkness" is a powerful exploration of mental illness in Nigeria, and the devastating toll it takes on those who suffer in silence. This film brings Bolu's story to life in a way that is both raw and unflinching, yet ultimately hopeful. It is a tribute to the strength and resilience of women who refuse to be defined by their struggles and a call to action for greater awareness and support for mental health issues in Nigeria and beyond.
