Asian American roots in the Pacific Northwest run deep, and dovetail with the region's rich and complex landscape. Though our contemporary zeitgeist is dark, harsh, uncertain, at times absurd—as many of the films in this program depict—we are also strengthened by our family and community ties, and rooted in our local history and heritage. This program is only available to view in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington state.

Preah Kanloung

In commemoration of Mak Fai Kung Fu Dragon & Lion Dance Association's Golden Anniversary in August 2024, this short documentary explores the origins of the Association; how Mak Hin Fai became an instructor, a talented lion dancer, and the significant events and people that brought Mak Fai to Seattle. For this Semicentennial, they give thanks to our neighborhood, the Seattle Chinatown-International District, to their friends around the globe, and dedicate the next 50 years towards serving the community even more!

The Golden 50: A Mak Fai Anniversary

Taky Kimura was Bruce Lee’s best friend and senior most student, meeting Bruce when he was just a new arrival to Seattle, WA. This short film tells the story of a Japanese-American who survived the incarceration camps of World War II, and went on to meet and train with the greatest martial arts legend of all time. Now 96 years old, Taky has passed down Bruce’s original teachings and the tradition of Jeet Kune Do to his son, Andy Kimura, who continues the legacy where it all started; in Seattle’s Chinatown/International District.

In an intergenerational collaboration between Los Angeles-based electronica/soul trio Bootleg Orchestra and singer Roger Rigor from iconic Filipino band VST & Co, this short documentary explores the creative process of producing a song that calls for international solidarity for climate justice and highlights the role of music in giving life to a movement.

Kenji, an aspiring Japanese actor by day and an Uber driver by night, frequently finds himself standing in for his more successful rival, Chris, an established Asian actor. One evening, Kenji unknowingly picks up Chris as a passenger, and their ride takes an unexpected turn.

The 13th annual Seattle Asian American Film Festival is continuing our hybrid model this year at the Wing Luke Museum and Broadway Performance Hall in-person from June 20-21, 2025.
