Alma and Alex are two teenage sisters who are coming of age within their confined and surreal world. The pair have lived with their controlling mother in an abandoned woodland hotel for their entire lives. As they attempt to survive in this sheltered settlement, their mother constantly warns them of the perils of the outside world, principally the life-threatening danger of sunlight. And so, the family only leave their dwelling at night, under the safety of the shadows.

The story revolves around the mother-daughter relationship as it develops in a condition of isolation, where mutual reliance takes on a psychotic and obsessive form. As they grow up, however, the two girls develop a new awareness that causes them to break their mother’s rules and offset the apparent balance of their lives, revealing some disturbing secrets. ‘Shadows’ is a raw, challenging and transportive fable which chronicles the inevitable undoing of an unhealthy, co-dependant bond.
