Some people have never even heard of Mountrath.

It is a small town. A farming community. And life has had its struggles for as long as they can remember.

The elders remember those hardships as the good times; there were no locks on doors and you could walk into your neighbour’s house for a cup of tea. Religious fasting days meant very little to the people of Mountrath back then because “there was no meat... you’d be lucky to get an egg!” They took time to appreciate the small things and they had time for each other.

Today’s struggles are different.

The town has been bypassed by a motorway and it is still recovering from the last recession.

The last thing they needed was CoVid-19.

When the global pandemic struck their community, most of the few remaining businesses closed their doors, staff lost their jobs, people were locked into their homes, families were separated and for the first time in their history and, for the first time in their history, they didn’t even have each other.

The days grew darker and darker and when a much-loved member of the community was taken from them by sudden death, many a town might have crumbled.

Not Mountrath!

Great struggles build strong characters and the town drew on its community spirit of old. The people lined the streets to pay respect to their deceased loved one and it was a moment to face their fears and embrace life, together.

Just like the old days.
