Los Angeles, 2019. Times are shitty, and they’re about to get worse. When Scout Durwood’s girlfriend dumps her unexpectedly, Scout takes stock in her life and determines that from now on, if something doesn’t feel one hundred percent authentic to her, she’s not doing it! Following the devastating break up, Scout inadvertently becomes the leader of a hipster millennial cult that engages with the multiverse and of course, aliens. But when members of the cult start to disappear, she soon discovers that her journey of self-discovery could trigger the end of civilization as we know it and is forced to take on her biggest opponent yet: herself.

Director Biography - Scout Durwood
SCOUT DURWOOD is an LA based comedian. Her debut studio album, TAKE ONE THING OFF, was released with Blue Élan Records along with a twenty-two episode digital series of the same name, which was nominated for Best Indie Series at the 2019 Streamy Awards. In 2020 and 2021 and she released follow up EP’s, COMEDY ELECTRONICA VOL. 1 & 2. Scout starred in MTV’s scripted comedy, MARY + JANE and FUNNY GIRLS on Oxygen. Her thirty minute comedy special is available on the Epix series, UNPROTECTED SETS. Scout is an accomplished cabaret singer and nationally touring comedian. www.scoutdurwood.com
SCOUT DURWOOD Director Statement:
YOUTOPIA began, as many projects do, with a break up. My girlfriend asked me to marry her, which was confusing because I don’t believe in marriage. I said yes, anyway, and a year later, she dumped me.
I was confused, not only by the break up, but by the concept of marriage, itself. Alone in my apartment, I thought about all the many arts of society I don’t understand and am helpless to reform: single use plastic, fee for service healthcare, the tobacco industry, straws. I didn’t know what to do about any of it. So I decided to make a movie.
YOUTOPIA was an uphill battle from the start. Among other obstacles our production schedule straddled a pandemic. I have come to believe, however, those challenges are what made this project so great; YOUTOPIA isn’t awesome despite how challenging it was to make, but because of it: the same way I didn’t grow as a person despite my break up, but as a direct result.
I made this film with family—literally in that my mother ran craft services, but also figuratively in that the folks who came together to work on this masterpiece have become my ride or dies. I am incredibly proud of the world we have created, and I hope that you are able to take something from it, too. We may not have successfully reformed healthcare just yet, but I feel like the straw thing is way more manageable than it was.
In conclusion, be the strange you wish to see in the world. If you can’t dazzle them with talent, baffle them with bullshit. Bedazzle and be beautiful. Glitter and be gay.
Please tell us your motivation for making your film:
My music label asked me to do a series of videos for an album I had coming out. I had made a twenty-two episode digital series for my first album, TAKE ONE THING OFF, and wanted to film this one as a single unified narrative. The story is based on feeling unhappy in my relationship with America, so I imagined what it would be like to break up with my country the same way one breaks up with a toxic ex.
What is the theme of your submission?:
Escapism!
What was the message you wanted to convey with this project?:
That so many of the systems we accept as part of the status quo are malleable.
