Forging new paths through virtual and tactile worlds, this dazzling collection of short works offers unexpected insights into old institutions, communion through simulations, and reflections on the pain and joy of visibility.
She Became Visible is short film set in Chicago following Grace, a Chinese American transracial adoptee. She recently transferred from a small, not very diverse (very white) community college in Massachusetts, and despite currently being in the city, she lives in solitude. Her emergence into an unfamiliar space where she socializes with affluent East Asian students leaves her feeling left out, invisible, and lonely, as she was unprepared to be separated and feel distanced by the class and racial expectations placed upon her. Meeting a new friend, by chance, who feels closer to home helps begin a transition in her understanding as an Asian adoptee. New experiences and places make her visible and perhaps seen in ways she hasn’t before.
