“Home” is an animated personal documentary about the artist’s childhood home, which was demolished in 2009 during China’s forced eviction. Through the artist’s conversations with her family, this piece illustrates the exploration of her personal memory about the house and extends to the shared memory as a citizen under China’s rapid urban development.

Night Patrol is about a security guard who captures video footage while performing surveillance on his night patrol. He patrols the spaces of one of the largest American art museums. The patrol becomes a time-based performance monitored and timed by superiors. Here, the guard becomes creator who becomes actor, and the patrol becomes the action in a video piece. He creates document of surveillance under camera, only this time it is under the surveillance of the creator. As the guard’s performance progresses, the creator asynchronously reads from the letter of termination stating a failure of "proper patrol officer protocols".

Everyday we use and apply our senses, most of time without much thought. Within our techno-isolated society, blocked by AirPods and noise-cancelling headphones, we rarely get the chance to enjoy a common sonic soundscape. As a student of sound, I propose an experiment, exposing the audience to a world of sound recreating texture, depth, color and space through sonic visualization. This sonic space will begin to act as an exercise to zone in, isolate and expand certain sounds, giving the audience the freedom to see the sound of their choosing with their ears. Furthermore, the sonic story itself will run like a movie, creating a canvas for the viewers imagination and interpretation of the sounds. The ear is a particular sensory channel as it consumes areas we can not see or touch, and I hope that this will paint pictures much farther than one could’ve imagined.

She Became Visible is short film set in Chicago following Grace, a Chinese American transracial adoptee. She recently transferred from a small, not very diverse (very white) community college in Massachusetts, and despite currently being in the city, she lives in solitude. Her emergence into an unfamiliar space where she socializes with affluent East Asian students leaves her feeling left out, invisible, and lonely, as she was unprepared to be separated and feel distanced by the class and racial expectations placed upon her. Meeting a new friend, by chance, who feels closer to home helps begin a transition in her understanding as an Asian adoptee. New experiences and places make her visible and perhaps seen in ways she hasn’t before.

She Became Visible

Grace, a Chinese American transracial adoptee, encounters class and cultural differences, both joyful and painful with the people she least expects, catalyzing a rediscovery and rework of her understanding of her Asian identity.
