Who knew that Herb Alpert, whose distinctive and Grammy-winning Tijuana Brass sound transported us south of the border throughout the 60s, is a nice Jewish boy from Los Angeles?  He is also one of the great independent record producers in history, recording artists at his A&M studio as varied as Sergio Mendes, Burt Bacharach, Cat Stevens, The Carpenters, Peter Frampton, and The Police. And he is, at the age of 85, a renowned abstract painter and sculptor. Beyond that, he is a passionate philanthropist, whose generous support of music and arts programs, and of the students who attend them, has widened worlds.  Herb Alpert Is…is a tribute to a remarkable man, but perhaps even more than that, a joyful, nostalgic journey for those of us who have known and loved his music.
