Give as a gift
A second shot at love comes sooner than expected for a young widow and widower who meet the day of their spouses' funerals.
The story follows Freya, a former singer-songwriter turned elementary music teacher, and Gus, a professional music producer. Both of them are coming off being terminal caregivers, sorting through young widowhood, and embarking on solo-parenting their young kids.
Their families are trying to show up for them. Freya’s mom is preoccupied with what other people are thinking and her sister is MIA. Meanwhile, Gus’s brother and brother-in-law are walking on eggshells and heaping on pity, with just a touch of judgement.
After an accidental casket swap meet cute and the first truly honest conversation either of them have had in a long time, Gus and Freya become fast friends, starting an ad hoc music therapy group just the two of them, meeting to write on the anniversary of their spouses’ deaths each month.
As the months pass they begin filling in the gaps in each others’ lives with more than just music and ever so slowly they begin to catch feelings. Some unexpected good news about their music has them on an accidental, celebratory date. Forcing them to ask, is it too soon? Freya especially doubts if she is ready to move on or if she ever will be. To which Gus reminds her of what she said back when they first met: "We only get one chance at this life and I don't want to waste another minute of it caring what anyone else thinks."
Both Freya and Gus have to ask themselves if they have the courage to fall in love again.
