Recognized as a pioneer of the disco sound and the “Godfather of Disco,” Vincent Montana Jr. was born and raised in Philadelphia. Influenced by Igor Stravinsky's performance of "The Firebird Suite" as a young boy, he grows up learning music and playing in jazz clubs. Becoming a session musician at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, Vincent works with producer Thom Belle and the producing team of Gamble & Huff creating the "Sound of Philadelphia" a mature sounding danceable soul music and form the instrumental group MFSB, known for hits like "Love Is the Message", “The Sound of Philadelphia,” and "K-Jee" featured in "Saturday Night Fever". By the mid 70’s, Vincent leaves Philadelphia for New York City, where he forms the Salsoul Orchestra under Salsoul Records. The orchestra becomes a success producing hits like "You're Just the Right Size", "Tangerine", and the disco classic “Magic Bird of Fire”’. However, disputes over royalties lead Vincent to leave in ’79 joining Atlantic Records and continues to produce disco music like "# 1 Dee Jay". Creating his own label, Vincent produces a precursor to house music, "Heavy Vibes". In the 90s and early 2000s, he is sought out by recording producers for his arrangement talents. In 2000 he is recognized by the dance and D.J. community with a "Lifetime Achievement Award" for his musical contributions. With over 50 years of musical success, the question remains. Should Vincent Montana Jr. be recognized with a "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Recording Academy?
