I'm sure when you hear that these are "Isolation" short films, you will immediately think about the isolation at home during this pandemic. That is actually true for some of them--a couple were even filmed while on lockdown. That is not all of them, though. I was thinking of this theme long before we know what COVID-19 was. We have a short film block about relationships, and we have another one about family. This one is about the absence of either, and it is something that is personally quite terrifying to me. We also are asking a question with at least two of the short films (VR Food and Jeff Drives You): is it still isolation when one's company is a machine? See what you think!

A lonely gay man falls in love with an artificially intelligent car over the course of a road trip.

I'm going to reveal here that we spoke quite a lot about where to fit this film in our short film blocks. We have one block called "We Are In This Together," about partnerships, and another called "Isolation," meaning obvious. JEFF DRIVES YOU really could fit in both, in a very interesting way considering they are basically polar opposite concepts. The decision really is about how real one considers a relationship with AI. I chose "Isolation," which likely says something about me. In either case, this film clearly got us thinking! -Miguel
