It is certainly cliché to say that power corrupts, and avoiding that cliché made me second, third, and fourth-guess myself about the ties that bind these short films into a coherent block. Despite my hesitance, I went with the cliché to an extent. First of all, as we are seeing quite plainly these last few months, as an idea it certainly holds up. Second of all, these films are not just about power in isolation. They are about the dynamics at play when one person or group of people has power over another. How does each party react to the ways that power is wielded, and how aware are they that the power dynamic even exists in the first place? These questions can lead to heaps of anxiety, plenty of pain, and a whole host of tragic consequences. That is what I thought when exploring these particular titles.

Hairy Soul Man Depicts a day in the life of depression through hand-painted carboards sets and comedy soul music.

"Kai Smythe is extraordinarily creative, this is excellent." -Programmer Rebekah Fieschi

Director/Artist: Kai Smythe has been creating and performing his own independent theatre, music and film projects for over 15 years. In 2010 Kai graduated with a Bachelor of Film and Television at the Victorian College of Arts in Melbourne, Australia, where he made his first full length pilot for his comedy sci fi series, Rented Space.

With his friend, Australian comedian Tim Mager, Kai created the action adventure duo Mager and Smythe. Their first show “In Search of Atlantis” toured throughout Australia in 2010, receiving multiple awards and critical acclaim. Their follow up show “The Road To Shangri La” premiered at the 2015 Melbourne Fringe Festival, receiving the award for Best Cabaret, and garnered six nominations at the 2016 Green Room Awards. The show was written while Mager and Smythe travelled through Asia, the whole experience filmed for a feature length documentary currently in post production.

Kai’s solo project “Hairy Soul Man” is an original comedy soul music extravaganza that transcends the comedy genre, using infectious grooves and sexually explosive harmonies. A winner of several awards for his live shows, both as a solo performer and with his ten piece soul band behind him, Hairy Soul Man has toured internationally with critically acclaimed performances and sell out shows. His music videos have been selected into film festivals all around the world, receiving numerous awards and creating a cult online following.
