It is certainly cliché to say that power corrupts, and avoiding that cliché made me second, third, and fourth-guess myself about the ties that bind these short films into a coherent block. Despite my hesitance, I went with the cliché to an extent. First of all, as we are seeing quite plainly these last few months, as an idea it certainly holds up. Second of all, these films are not just about power in isolation. They are about the dynamics at play when one person or group of people has power over another. How does each party react to the ways that power is wielded, and how aware are they that the power dynamic even exists in the first place? These questions can lead to heaps of anxiety, plenty of pain, and a whole host of tragic consequences. That is what I thought when exploring these particular titles.
Police brutality protests boil in South Central Los Angeles as four teens plan a robbery and find themselves in a comic book store.
