Director Statement

Toothless is a descent into the subconscious of its lead character-- Ruth. I wanted to honor Lily's larger-than-life brain child by creating a 'big movie' feel. We shot the piece on anamorphics and used comic book inspiration for some of our framing. Lily and I are both audiophiles and love strange music. It felt fitting to create a sonic landscape that matched the out of time and surreal energy, so we stacked the music bed with tracks that gave it urgency and kineticism (thanks to brilliant artists like Budos Band and Brian Jonestown Massacre that were willing to work with us). Overall, Toothless is an exploration into the character's dark past as she begins to break down her walls. The short film is just the beginning of her story.
