HSDFF Panel: Grant Writing Workshop

This workshop will teach you how to nail your next fiscal application. Presented In partnership with the International Documentary Association (IDA), featuring Dana Merwin, Program Officer with the Grants Department at IDA, and the filmmakers of Women In Blue -a recent recipient of IDA funding and screening at HSDFF 2020-  the talk will explore best practices in grant writingWith Director Deirdre Fishel and Producer Beth Levison, this workshop will use Women In Blue as a test case, exploring methods to elevate stories, convey critical information, and pitfalls to avoid when applying for funding. 


Dana Merwin

Dana Merwin is the Program Officer in the Grants Department at the International Documentary Association. Prior to joining IDA, Dana was the production manager for Al Jazeera America’s documentary unit and the Peabody Award-winning series Fault Lines. She has served as a production manager on numerous film and television productions.


Deirdre Fishel, Director, Women In Blue

Deirdre Fishel has a 20 year history of directing both documentaries and dramas which have premiered in competition at Sundance and SXSW and been broadcast in thirty countries worldwide. Deirdre co-wrote a book, based on her award-winning documentary STILL DOING IT: The Intimate Lives of Women Over 65, with producer Diana Holtzberg, published by Penguin Books. Other projects include an on-line documentary, SUICIDE ON CAMPUS produced in conjunction with the New York Times Magazine and THE BOY GAME, distributed by New Day Films. Deirdre attended AFI’s directing program and has an MFA from Hunter College. She is an Associate Professor and the Director of the BFA in Film/Video at the City College of New York.


Beth Levison- Producer, Women In Blue

Beth Levison is an Emmy and Peabody-winning producer/director based in NYC. Recent work includes producing Women In Blue (2020), Made In Boise (2019), Personal Statement (2018), 32 Pills: My Sister’s Suicide (2017) and The Trials of Spring (2015). Her documentary directorial debut LEMON (2011) about Brooklyn-born poet and performer Lemon Andersen was shown at some 40 festivals around the world, selected by the State Department’s American Film Showcase and broadcast on PBS. Levison is the founder of Hazel Pictures, a co-founder of the Documentary Producers Alliance (DPA), producing faculty with the School of Visual Arts MFA program in Social Documentary Film, and mom to two boys.
