In contemporary China, Hu Xin and Simu work to preserve the secret historical language of Nushu, a form of writing created and used by Chinese women to communicate under an oppressive patriarchal society. Both women are drawn to the ancient script for different reasons, but they are each determined to keep the communication form alive. HIDDEN LETTERS examines the bonds of sisterhood and the power of the written word while confronting a culture still reliant on women’s subservience to men.
