OPENING NIGHT FILM
Opposites attract, or so the saying goes. And that’s certainly the case for Emilia and Renata, two teenage girls in high school in Mexico. Emilia wants to be an architect. She’s been planning it for years now, taking all the right tests, getting straight As, driving the school librarian crazy with all her book requests. She’s focused, she’s driven, and she has her entire life mapped out. Oh, and she also has the ability to see people who are close to death shine and glow, literally. But that’s not something she shares.
When a classmate dies, she attends his wake and there she meets Renata, a free spirit who lives in the present and plans nothing. You’d think she’d be Emilia’s nemesis, but the two strike up a friendship that soon becomes romantic. To give more details would spoil the joy of watching this film for the first time. Suffice it to say that each girl has a reason for why she’s the way she is, and once they learn those reasons about each other, they’re forced to reevaluate the way they live life.
Both girls are incredibly likeable, and you can’t help but root for them. How long has it been since a film moved you? This one is sweet and beautiful and if you’re anything like me, it will stay with you long after the credits roll.
