What would stepping into the brain of an online-obsessed Gen Zer look like? Probably a lot like Alice Júnior, which zips and zaps after the glitter-strewn exploits of the titular heroine (blogger Anne Celestino Mota) as she is ripped from her life in bustling Recife when her odd but adoring father (Emmanuel Rosset) needs to pursue a beguiling scent for his new perfume. Alice is a trans VM (Virgin Mouth, as she’s never been kissed) and prolific advice vlogger who sees the world in emojis and glints of connection. In trying to acclimate to the drab, uniform-clad Catholic school in conservative southern Brazil, Alice is determined to give the town some colour, even while others insist on tearing her down. Thankfully, she’s got an open-hearted posse on her side, including a “fierce” outsider, the exuberant “snap news” reporter, and the dreamiest couple on campus. Not to mention Rhinoceros, her fabulously dressed cat. Lampooning teen comedy tropes like the “legendary pool party” while embracing the coming-of-age charms of the best films in that genre, Alice Júnior has as much vivacity and cleverness as Alice herself, and just as many unexpected surprises.
