BREAKING FAST | MIKE MOSALLAM | ÉTATS-UNIS / USA | 2020 | 92 MIN | V.O.A. & ARABE S.-T.A. / ENGLISH & ARAB S.-T.EN.

With the thoughtfully delightful Breaking Fast, writer-director Mike Mosallam has managed that rare cinematic feat: a film both crowd-pleasing and dramatically resonant, touching upon tropes of classic Hollywood romances, but with a knowing wink. All the while parsing the complexities of faith in all its permutations. Mo (Haaz Sleiman), an observant Muslim, stubbornly retreats into his routines when his lover chooses to marry a woman to appease his devout father. A year later, with Ramadan beginning, Mo’s non-practicing best friend, Sam (the hilarious Amin El Gamal), encourages Mo to emerge from his shell. The advice coincides with an introduction to the “mega-attractive,” Arabic-speaking, seemingly bulletproof charmer named, fittingly enough, after Superman’s birth name: Kal-El (Michael Cassidy, whose last brush with the Man of Steel was as Jimmy Olsen in Batman v Superman). Kal saves Mo from breaking fast alone each night, the two spending the month avoiding impurity and getting to know each other as friends, day by day coming to realize that hiding behind Mo’s show of tolerance and Kal’s Teflon affability are deeper vulnerabilities they’ll need to contend with or risk breaking more than just the fast.
