Suite au deuil de son mari, Claudina se retrouve seule et dans une situation économique précaire. Alors que la veuve se voit hébergée chez sa fille et son petit-fils, elle fait la connaissance de la voisine, Elsa. Cette dernière, de par son indépendance vis-à-vis de son mari et ses tours de chant dans un bar caché (et queer), fascine Claudina. Si les deux femmes s’embrassent, ce baiser sera d’abord et avant tout pour Claudina le point de départ de sa quête identitaire, le premier jour du reste de sa vie… Pour son premier film, la réalisatrice Nicol Ruiz Benavides s’intéresse à la découverte identitaire et sexuelle d’une femme d’âge mûr, vivant dans un petit village conservateur du Chili, où tous sont obsédés par les ovnis. Si le ton du film se conjugue au rythme (lent) de l’émancipation du personnage, Ruiz révèle sans conteste une maturité tranquille qui sait conjuguer mystère et assurance à son univers.
After the death of her husband, 70-year-old Claudina (Rosa Ramírez), no stranger to oddity, moves from the Chilean countryside to a small town of “strange” things. The town is abuzz with speculation about the reoccurring visitations of blinding white light from the sky, as Claudina is drawn into an alien existence right here on Earth. Her daughter’s beguiling neighbour, Elsa (Romana Satt), introduces her to a world that Claudina had only a taste of as a young girl. A world of self-expression and sapphic exploration. Together, they make visits to the mansion on the other side of the bridge, where a dandyish man throws elaborate and enchanting house parties, Elsa singing to the crowd of outsiders in a smoky pyramid of light. Soon, Claudina is throwing pebbles at Elsa’s window like a teenager whenever she has the chance to sneak away from her controlling daughter, invited in for slow dancing and lovemaking, though the eventual return of Elsa’s travelling husband looms large over their courtship and the lights blaze more and more frequently from above, portending invasion or release.
