In 2019, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) celebrated its 175th anniversary. Far from festive, however, is a long, infamous chapter in its history when homosexuality was defined as a mental illness, treated by everything from talk therapy and reconditioning to more aggressive, “horror movie” treatments like electroshock, aversion therapy, and lobotomy. It took protests, disruptions, and infiltrating the halls of power in order to take hold of the microphone – both literally and metaphorically – to ensure that a “true dialogue” would occur. One clever tactic after another, stirring speech after stirring speech, those on the front lines worked tirelessly to convince psychiatrists to rewrite the script, proving to them that happiness, not unhealthiness, could truly define homosexual lives. Enlivened by first-hand accounts, Cured takes us from the conservative 60s into the liberating 70s, and from coast to coast across the U.S., in a fast-paced, in-the-trenches look at a crucial turning point in gay history. Advancing from the moral sickness of medically unfounded bigotry to the “electric” heights of activist success, we witness what can be accomplished when community building and righteous anger converge.
