AHEAD OF THE CURVE | JEN RAININ & RIVKAY BETH MEDOW | ÉTATS-UNIS / USA | 2020 | 95 MIN | V.O.A. / ENGLISH

On a wing and a prayer – or, more accurately, a hoof and a whole lot of heart – Frances “Franco” Stevens founded Deneuve magazine at the dawn of the 90s with the help of a lucky streak on some long-shot horses and a willingness to go all in on her goals. Thanks to Franco, and the activists and artists surrounding her, a minority public starved of visibility would be given the thoughtful attention they deserved. Deneuve flourished at the epicenter of politics, progress, and fashion. If it served the lesbian community, it was likely within Deneuve’s glossy, boundary-pushing pages, and not even a lawsuit filed by Catherine Deneuve herself could sink it. Rebranded as Curve, the magazine remained attuned to the cultural pulse, surviving in an ever-changing media landscape, even as publications toppled like dominos around it. Director Jen Rainin, Franco’s wife, follows as Franco travels far and wide, San Francisco to Toronto, gaining insight from a younger generation of queer leaders on how to remain relevant and community-focused in the Internet Era, determined to continue championing the inclusiveness she has spent a lifetime – and many wild curves – trying to cultivate.
