Au tournant des années 80 et 90, le groupe suédois Army of Lovers a marqué la pop avec ses hits disco (Israelism, censuré par la BBC, Crucified, Sexual Revolution), son imagerie camp et son esprit libertaire, mélange de Pierre & Gilles et de Milli Vanilli glam parfaitement assumé. Composé de deux hommes et d’une femme qui ne savaient ni chanter ni jouer d’un instrument, le band a créé des spectacles et des clips extravagants, irrévérencieux et déjantés, où il tordait le cou aux préjugés raciaux, sexuels et religieux. Autour d’images d’archives et de rencontres avec les trois membres du groupe, le film suit surtout le parcours de l’un d’eux, Jean-Pierre Barda, un personnage fascinant, Français juif, élevé en Suède et qui, il y a quelques années, a tout lâché pour vivre en Israël, renouer avec ses racines, tout en conservant sa personnalité flamboyante. Un film plus sage que son sujet mais qui illustre bien la devise de ce groupe inclassable qui pratiquait la tolérance extrême : « Tout le monde devrait baiser avec tout le monde tout le temps! ».
Whether lip-synching his way through taboo scenarios in one of the hit 90s music videos that made his Swedish dance-pop group an international sensation or reclining, odalisque-like, on a couch in a corset and high-heeled boots, Jean-Pierre Barda is impossible to ignore. With a quick wit and the soul of a philosopher, Barda, who is of French/Algerian Jewish descent, ‘makes Aliyah,’ immigrating to Israel (with a freshly powdered face for his ID photo, of course). There, he happily lives a humbler – but no less vibrant – existence, volunteering with the military and creating a home for himself in a cozy apartment that, as one interviewer jokes, is “smaller than your dressing room in Stockholm.” Nevertheless, it’s plenty big enough to welcome his bandmates for juicy gossip as they prepare for their very first concert in the Holy Land that may or may not be their last as a group. Part raucous, “Behind the Music” confessional and part earnest soul-seeking, Asaf Galay’s documentary is rocket-fueled by the joyous power of standing out. And proves that it’s never too late for a second act.
