Sur une scène de terre battue, une quinzaine de jeunes danseurs et danseuses sont portés par les rythmes électroniques et technos propres aux raves des années 90. En mouvements ultra-ralentis et spasmodiques, filles et garçons se poussent, s’abandonnent, se repoussent, se désirent et s’ignorent. Et confient aussi à la caméra des bribes de leur intimité, de leurs espoirs, de leurs peurs. La vie de ces artistes nourrit-elle le spectacle ou est-ce l’inverse?
Créé en 2017, le spectacle Crowd a connu un grand succès auprès des amateurs de danse contemporaine. Avec une lenteur parfois insoutenable, la chorégraphe Gisèle Vienne y explore une sensualité à fleur de peau ou douceur, pulsions et cruauté se mêlent. Making-of atmosphérique, Si c’était de l’amour (If it Were Love) dissèque ces moments de création à chaud. Charnel et mystérieux, le film respire au plus près du corps des protagonistes. Envoutant. Émouvant aussi quand ce qui a l’air d’un exercice de style fait appel aux blessures les plus intimes des danseurs.
One of Gisèle Vienne’s fifteen dancers shudders through a crowded rave, bodies oscillating like jellyfish. Another convulses in tantric precision around a boy as if wanting to burrow his way inside. And we wonder what underpins these 90s-set personas and their various infatuations. As the young, international troupe of actors discusses the “Magic If” of motivations and arcs in cloistered pairs, we learn more about their characters – the trans boy and the Nazi tasting same-sex desire, the jilted lover and the “black hole” – and the figures writhing on stage take on new shades of meaning. In these enthralling craft talk sessions, the actors also critique issues of representation, repulsion, and control with radical honesty, and in their confessions and the execution of their roles, fiction seems to tip over into reality. Is what we’re witnessing genuine or a mask upon a mask? Are we, the viewer, an audience or a fly on the wall? With Patric Chiha’s intense, unforgettable documentary, the search for answers will leave you contemplating the inevitabilities and impossibilities of touch, as well as aching for the communal experience of the dancefloor in all its ecstatic messiness.
