THE WHISTLE | STORMMIGUEL FLOREZ | ÉTATS-UNIS / USA | 2020 | 57 MIN | V.O.A. / ENGLISH

This lesbian friend – no, wait, that one? Or was it gay men in an El Paso cruising spot? The Mercado people? Wherever it came from, the whistle was more than just a short, high-pitched inhalation of breath. It was one of the methods for binding together Latina LGBTQ+ women coming out in and around Albuquerque, New Mexico in the late 70s. The Whistle, with a warm intimacy akin to sitting around a dinner table with childhood friends and swapping stories, chronicles this network of mutual love and support. Here is a time capsule – crushes on the high school coach, the protective magic of coded language, the life-changing significance of a teacher’s influence – though StormMiguel Florez’s documentary reflects something fundamental about these women’s collective histories. Sure, you’ll leave knowing what it means to be “wrecked” or to have taken “a walk on the wild side,” but, more importantly, you’ll have new appreciation for the personal choices that have altered the sociopolitical landscape for the better, and gain a few kindred spirits in this current era of conservative push back.

Caro Comes Out is an experiment, but it's also a comedy, but it's also a short film about coming out to your entire Cuban family.
