WELL ROUNDED | SHANA MYARA | CANADA | 2020 | 61 MIN | V.O.A. / ENGLISH

In a world where it’s somehow radical simply to love your fat self, Well Rounded is here to set the record straight. Health care bias, cultural associations with food, fat phobia within queer communities – director Shana Myara tackles it all, straight from the BIPOC, LGB2STQ+ women with firsthand experience. Comedians (Indigenous superstar Candy Palmater and Taiwanese-Canadian stand-up comic Joanne Tsung), artists (burlesque multi-hyphenate Ivory and model/stylist Lydia Okello), and highly respected doctors and writers in the field inform, crack jokes, and spill about the jaw-dropping anecdotes of discrimination they face. Despite a capitalistic system that undermines them, queer women of colour have grown and flourished. Surrounded by quirky-cute animation by Alexandra Hohner and the vibrant street art of Canada’s urban centers, these women refuse to fade into the cultural background, stepping forward to tell their stories and underscore how they’ve come to realize the public-eye passions they once felt excluded from.
