Ben et Sam se rencontrent par hasard lors d’un été new-yorkais particulièrement chaud. Le premier est Blanc, déconnecté de lui-même, et baise hommes et femmes pour, visiblement, oublier un traumatisme d’enfance qui lui donne allergies, nausées et vomissements. Le second est Noir, plutôt bien dans sa peau mais dans le placard et tout juste rescapé d’une agression à main armée. À chacun ses blessures, à chacun ses forces. Lesquelles des deux les réunira ou les éloignera l’un de l’autre? Ce qui commence comme le carnet de bord d’un fêtard/baiseur solitaire et sauvage se transforme en une histoire d’amour rythmée par les soubresauts de douleurs anciennes. Un voyage exaltant et déchirant que Cicada déroule avec un souci du détail, une poésie et une sensibilité qui touchent. Le charisme calme de Sheldon D. Brown (Sam) et celui plus fiévreux de Matt Fifer (Ben) portent ce film aussi dur que délicat.
As Ben (Matthew Fifer) and Sam (Sheldon D. Brown) circle the fountain at Washington Square Park, the camera captures them in reflection, each a reluctant Narcissus, slowly learning to fall in love with their own images in the hope of more fully embracing the other’s. This personal and relational quest forms the warm, beating center of this topical, instantly classic film (based on a true story), the two late bloomers navigating the knotted intersections of sexuality and race. What begins as comedic patter – trading in 90s references to “Mambo No. 5” and Animaniacs, “pregnant with glow” – transitions into the thornier territory of family and friends, and trauma both deep-rooted and throbbingly fresh, testing and deepening their affection. As the Sandusky abuse trial simmers in the background, buried truths crawl to the surface. Cobie Smulders, David Burtka, and SNL’s Bowen Yang lend their star power, while Eric Schleicher’s cinematography makes New York City feel lived in, cozy, the backdrop to writer-director Matthew Fifer’s shrewd, naturalistic dialogue, each lovingly crafted scene crackling with vitality to create a symphonic composite as all-encompassing and extraordinary as the cicadas’ song.
